Inclusive Design

Inclusive design is designing a product that serves more than is excludes.  This relates to sustainability as it is the designers responsibility to develop a well though through design that can be used by many different groups.

Throughout this project the Masters students did practical research not only to learn what inclusive design means but to understand the needs of those with disabilities.  Specifically when they attended the Allianz Dialogue Training Center for the Blind in Munich as well as participated in a blind football game and discussion in Berlin.

The initial thought of inclusive design was to design for as many people as possible. But as the students progressed through the project they learned it was more about understanding the needs of others and incorporating these functions into their design.  Maybe they don’t need to be so obvious or specific, but rather values that apply to many.

The materials were sponsored by Holden Outerwear and the company was used as a hypothetical example.
