For this project the ESMOD Master's class worked with designer Francois Girbaud, to learn from his extensive experience in creative processing of visionary wattwash and ozone techniques. His extraordinary laser-technique contributes highly to both the improvement of environmental and working conditions in the denim industry. The students worked on material manipulation as well as innovative use of the techniques, in effort to achieve holistically sustainable concepts.  On the 17th of February 2012 they were invited to have their final presentation in Paris with Francois Girbaud.

Kristen wanted to combine all the elements of stencil art and fashion to create awareness through communication and involvement into one product or concept.  Art for social change – a type of wearable art that engages and educates the viewer.  Using a painter’s uniform to represent a blank canvas, street artist will tell a story to deliver a clear message to the public.  Commissioned street artists will create a wearable art uniform expressing their interpretation of global issues.  Thus, encouraging and allowing the public to get involved, take a stand and implement this much-needed change.

Berlin is a city recognized for it’s prolific street art.  For artists, the historical events that traumatized and redefined Berlin have created a platform for self-expression. The walls surrounding this city serve as a blank canvass for an artist to convey messages.  What was once a communication tool between the East and West, showcasing thoughts of passionate civilians, has now expanded into street art, mural paintings and advertisements.

Street art is inspiring because it is non-monetary form of communication.  For many artists, immense risk is taken just to convey a message.  Instead of making art for a gallery, these artists provide art for the public.  These messages are imposed on the public in their entirety.  In a way, this is more impactful because the viewer is exposed to these messages on an unconscious level.  The viewer did not solicit themselves to see this particular piece nor have a preconceived notion about the artist or what they are trying to convey.  Thus, street art reaches a larger audience and has the ability to establish interest provoked discussions on specific issues.
